A Day in the Life of a Yoga Student in Rishikesh

Early morning by the Ganga in Rishikesh

Curious what a day of studying yoga in Rishikesh actually looks like? Here is a walk through a typical training day, from sunrise practice by the Ganga to the quiet of the evening.

Waking With the River

Rising is usually around 5:30am, while it is still dark. Temple bells and a distant conch mark the quiet walk to the shala. Practice often opens with kriyas such as jal neti or kapalabhati, followed by seated meditation or pranayama, and a shared cup of chai in silence.

Asana and Introspection

By 6:30am, the morning asana class begins, Hatha or a meditative Vinyasa flow, usually 90 to 120 minutes, guided toward felt experience rather than performance. Some mornings are strong and steady, others soft and slow, but there is always a layer being worked through.

Chai Breaks and Conversation

After practice comes breakfast around 9am, and the conversations that often turn out to be as formative as the classes themselves, students comparing notes on what brought them here, and what is shifting. Lunch follows around 1pm, with free time for naps, riverside walks or journaling.

Philosophy Class

Early afternoon usually means philosophy, the koshas, karma, the yamas and niyamas, or a reading from the Bhagavad Gita. These sessions tend to give language to what students have already been feeling on the mat.

Evening Integration

Evenings are for journaling, a kirtan or satsang, or simply sitting by the river as the light fades. Most students are asleep by 9:30pm, ready for the rhythm to repeat.
