A Beginner's Guide to Choosing a Yoga Teacher Training in India

A beginner student in a first yoga teacher training class in India

India, as the birthplace of yoga, offers a depth of context that is hard to find elsewhere, but with so many schools and programs on offer, choosing well as a beginner can feel overwhelming.

Why Train in India

Training here means learning inside a culture where yoga is a lived practice, not an imported fitness trend, with traditional teaching often merged with more modern methodology. India also tends to offer strong value: comprehensive, authentic instruction often at a fraction of what comparable training costs elsewhere, set against a range of landscapes from Himalayan foothills to the coast.

What to Look for in a School

Confirm the school offers Yoga Alliance certified programs recognized internationally, and look for teachers with real depth of practice and teaching experience, not just credentials. Consider the curriculum's focus, whether it leans toward Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga or another style, and weigh the practical side too: accommodation, food, and the overall environment you'll be living in for weeks at a time.

Choosing a Program Length

The 200-hour training is the standard starting point, giving a full foundation in philosophy, anatomy, teaching methodology and practice, and is recognized by studios worldwide. Beyond that, 300-hour and 500-hour programs offer more specialization for those who already hold a 200-hour certification.

Choosing a Location

Rishikesh, the "Yoga Capital of the World," remains the most established choice, with its ashrams, the Ganges and a strong community of practitioners. Dharamshala offers a different atmosphere, cooler mountain air and Tibetan Buddhist influence, for those drawn to a more mountain-retreat feel. Both are worth weighing against your own sense of what setting will actually support the work.

Getting Started

Prior yoga experience helps but is not required for most beginner-friendly 200-hour programs, a genuine willingness to learn matters more than existing flexibility. Look closely at a school's real teaching lineage and class sizes before committing, rather than choosing on convenience alone.

Prakruti Yogashala offers Yoga Alliance certified training in both Rishikesh and Dharamshala. See our full course list for details and pricing.
